March 20, 2020 – the MATHCOUNTS National Office has canceled the 2020 MATHCOUNTS National Competition. Please see below a message from the MATHCOUNTS National Office:
To MATHCOUNTS participants, their coaches, and families:
We appreciate your patience and understanding as the MATHCOUNTS National Office has monitored the Coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak and addressed its effect on MATHCOUNTS competitions. Out of concern for participants’ health amid the Coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak, and in compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation on March 15, 2020, that gatherings of 50 or more people in the U.S. be canceled for the next eight weeks, the 2020 MATHCOUNTS National Competition originally scheduled for May 9-12 is canceled, in addition to all state competitions originally scheduled March 12-31.
We understand not only the inconvenience this causes for volunteers, participants, and their families, but also the incredible disappointment this brings to the entire MATHCOUNTS community.
We hope that all participants take pride in the skills and friendships they gained on this journey—one that began the minute they attended their first MATHCOUNTS practice. They are all better problem solvers because they participated in MATHCOUNTS and nothing can ever take that away.
Please read our full statement about MATHCOUNTS programming during the Coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak at www.mathcounts.org/competition.
We hope the MATHCOUNTS community is staying safe and healthy during this difficult time.

Earlier message regarding state competitions
March 12, 2020 – MATHCOUNTS of California has received notice that the MATHCOUNTS national office has decided to cancel all remaining state competitions this year due to the coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak. That means the MATHCOUNTS of California State Competition has been canceled. No further state events will be held.
This decision was made out of an abundance of caution regarding the outbreak, because the safety and well-being of our Mathletes, coaches, and other volunteers are our top priority. MATHCOUNTS sincerely regrets not only the inconvenience this causes for participants and guests, but also the incredible disappointment this brings to the entire MATHCOUNTS community.
The MATHCOUNTS national office is working on an alternate method for determining the national competitors and will make an announcement about this no later than March 31, 2020.
A statement about today’s decision, as well as future updates, will be posted at www.mathcounts.org/competition. Please direct any questions or concerns about this decision to the MATHCOUNTS national office at email@example.com.
Thank you for your enthusiasm for MATHCOUNTS and for your understanding during this difficult time.
